Cedar shingles & shakes

Shingles and shakes are generally produced from either Western Red Cedar or Alaskan Yellow Cedar. Shingles are usually 450mm in length, bandsawn with a taper, while shakes are normally 600mm in length, hand split on one face with a bandsawn taper on the other.

Rosenfeld Kidson stocks the highest grade of Western Red Cedar shingles, No. 1 Blue Label, which are all heart and kiln-dried, suitable for wall and roof applications. We stock both untreated and CCA (H3) treated for greater durability (drinking water should not be collected from CCA treated roofs). We also stock No. 2 Red Label shingles untreated, suitable for landscape features and the like, where water proofing is not a consideration.

Shingles are sold by the ‘bundle’, which covers approximately 2.5m2 on a roof with a pitch steeper than 1:3 allowing approximately 150mm (one third) exposure and where water proofing is required. We can provide more accurate calculations tailored to individual situations and we would be pleased to quote your requirements for either shingles or shakes.

Rosenfeld Kidson, as timber merchants acknowledge the importance of conserving the world’s greatest renewable resource.

We are pleased to advise that we carry Chain-of-Custody (CoC) certification that enables us to sell timber that carries either FSC certification (SGS-COC-006703) or PEFC certification (SGS-PEFC/COC-0993).

FSC certified timber and PEFC certified timber undergo independent, third-party audited certification procedures at every step of the supply chain. This provides designers, specifiers, architects and consumers absolute assurance that those forest and wood products labelled as FSC certified or PEFC certified originate from legal sources, which are managed to prescribed social, economic and environmental standards.

As a New Zealand timber supplier offering the country’s largest range and quantity of specialist certified timbers we believe that stocking FSC & PEFC certified timber is essential for our continued growth. A major part of our timber range has FSC or PEFC certification and we are continually striving to increase this.
